SSUP India: Pioneering Research Projects

India is home to several SSUP initiatives, where universities are leveraging Sony’s sensing technologies to achieve new levels of innovation. Here are the standout projects:

  1. AI-Robotic System for Stroke Rehabilitation - IIIT Bangalore

Researchers at the International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore are developing an AI-Robotic System to assist stroke patients with rehabilitation. This system offers more than 8 degrees of freedom and aids in moving all parts of the upper limb including the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and fingers in rotational forms. It operates in both supportive and passive modes, suggested to be crucial while the post-stroke patients are recovering and honing back their motor skills.

  1. Modular Autonomous Robot for Pipeline Inspection - SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai

At SRM Institute, researchers are developing machine learning-based visual inspection techniques for crack detection on pipeline surfaces. Besides a circumferential scanning mechanism, the robot will feature a modularity-preserving 360-degree coverage mechanism of pipelines. To enhance safety and efficiency in pipeline maintenance, the operators will be able to monitor inspection results remotely via real-time data visualization.

  1. Agro ESP: Smart Polyhouse Solar Drying - Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham's project focuses on augmenting existing polyhouse solar dryers with an edge-based cyber-physical system, which includes sensors and actuators to improve monitoring, control, drying efficiency, and quality. By using multicore optimization on the edge, powered by Sony’s Spresense, the intelligent control system distributes online learning paradigms across multiple polyhouses and is being deployed in small and medium enterprises.

  1. Cow-Kin: Precision Animal Farming - Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore

In another project at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, researchers are implementing precision animal farming for cattle health and welfare. The Cow-Kin project includes a cyber-physical assessment system for cattle health vitals and robotic farm assistance, using Sony’s Spresense board. The project uses cow collars and a farm-assist rover to create a closed-loop system for precision farming.

  1. Intelligent Extrusion-Based Polymer 3D Printer - IIT Delhi

At the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, an intelligent extrusion-based polymer 3D printer is under development. This five-axis printer aims to support free part production, reducing the need for additional support structures during printing. Through this project, Sony's Spresense platform controls multi-axes and sensors attached to the 3D printer, enhancing the productivity and efficiency of these processes.

The SSUP initiative in India exemplifies the potential of collaborative research in sensing solutions. From healthcare to industrial applications, these projects create impactful solutions to real-world problems as well as advance technology.

Sensing Solution University Collaboration Program (SSUP) is a program that offers real collaboration opportunities for a network of partners, from university labs to teaching facilities. It encourages and supports research projects in the area of sensing solutions and promotes innovation and education.
