NuttX Workshop: UC Davis´ pioneering Wildfire Detection based on Spresense

The NuttX International Workshop is an event dedicated to the Apache NuttX Real-Time Operating System (RTOS), and it celebrated its fifth anniversary in 2023. This year's event took place on the 29th and 30th of September at FEEC/Unicamp in Campinas, Brazil.

One of the presentations was held by UC Davis University, and showcased their project to build a series of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) capable of serving as a mobile sensor network. Their mission? To predict the spatial and temporal propagation of air pollution caused by wildfires, a critical challenge in today's world.

Their future main goal is the integration of IoT sensors and UAVs for early wildfire detection and tracking. By introducing a smoke propagation model into the Spresense-enabled UAVs, and incorporating Sony's HDR camera into their framework, they intend to lead a new era of precision in wildfire detection.

UC Davis has been collaborating with Sony under the Sensing Solution University Collaboration Program (SSUP). SSUP is the university program launched by Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation (SSS) to build collaborations with university research groups around the world. It encourages and supports research projects with funding and hardware provided by Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation.

This workshop, with a focus on NuttX, has become a crucial gathering point for the global NuttX community, bringing together professionals and academics from the embedded systems field.

At the end of their presentation, there was a Q&A time, where the audience gave very good feedback on the presentation, as well as questions about how NuttX contributed to workflow among the research team. You can check out their full presentation here.
