Shane Francis wins Hero Open Source Developer title for May-June

Shane Francis is awarded the title as the latest Hero Open Source Developer for his extensive commits enabling the use of the fingerprint sensor on the AOSP Z5 phone series. Read more about Shane and how you can become the next Hero Open Source Developer after the jump.

The Hero Open Source Developer program was started in 2015 and works towards recognizing developers that have made large contributions to Sony’s AOSP for Xperia projects. Every other month, a prize is presented to the developer with the largest number of commits over the previous period.

Shane Francis

Shane, a 25-year-old software developer, lives in Norfolk, England and recently became a father for the first time. Shane has worked on several AOSP for Xperia projects and his latest major contribution was the Android driver that enabled the use of fingerprint on the Z5 AOSP phone series. As the fingerprint sensor was one of the few key hardware pieces that was not working for the series, Shane’s contributions made a significant difference.

Shane enjoyed figuring out how the fingerprint sensor functioned, and working on Android devices has always doubled as both a hobby and a way to enhance his skills as a software developer.

He is very excited and humbled by the win. “The Sony AOSP project is full of amazingly friendly and talented people,” Shane says. He is happy that others have been able to make use of the code he submitted.
Shane has been awarded an Xperia X Performance for his commits and is looking forward to contributing further.
