eMoody combines machine learning with Sony speakers

The winning team of the hackathon for Sony's Control API at Blekinge Institute of Technology

An app that determines your mood and chooses a playlist that fits that mood – that’s the idea from the winning team at the latest hackathon for Sony’s Audio Control API at Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) arranged by the Sony Developer Program. “The loud speakers from Sony are amazing, they have a lot of potential. When a group of developers like us start to work on these speakers using the Audio control API, it can be game-changing”, says team eMoody.

Five teams consisting of students from the Master of Science programme in computer science at BTH signed up for the hackathon that lasted for ten days. Equipped with a portable wireless Bluetooth/Wi-Fi speaker (SRS-ZR5), the challenge was to develop an audio control app using Sony’s Audio Control API. We from Developer Program were looking for creative solutions that integrate with other devices. The winning team fulfilled our wishes with an innovative solution that helps users in their everyday life, and that successfully combines machine learning with Sony speakers.

What’s so unique with eMoody?
-This app learns what kind of music you like in certain situations and plays a song based on that information. It collects information from news feeds and social media to determine your current mood. For example, if you are happy, eMoody plays joyful songs for you. This app recognizes the nearest speaker and shifts music accordingly, says Saivijay Pola, member of team eMoody.

What’s the future for this app?
-We have a lot of ideas! It can be used to play bedtime stories for children, and a timer can be used to turn off the speaker. eMoody can also be integrated with lighting solutions, and play songs that depends on the lighting conditions. We can probably also integrate it with other security solutions at home, as a surveillance/door camera. The possibilities are endless!

What’s your opinion about future collaboration with Sony and Developer Program in Lund?
-We are looking forward to create more apps with Sony’s Audio Control API and maybe commercialize these apps in collaboration with Sony. We can see a future career at Sony.
