Power Supply

Why won’t my SmartEyeglass start?

Try the following if you are having problems turning on the power:

  • Slide and hold the Power switch for about 4 seconds.
  • Make sure the battery is charged enough.
  • Make sure the USB power adapter is properly connected to both a power socket and the SmartEyeglass controller.
  • If SmartEyeglass is still not starting after having followed the above tips, please reset SmartEyeglass. To do this, slide and hold the Power switch and push the Camera button at the same time for about 7 seconds.

Why does SmartEyeglass automatically power off?

If you disconnect the Bluetooth connection between SmartEyeglass and a smartphone, and leave SmartEyeglass inactive for 5 minutes, SmartEyeglass will be powered off automatically.

NFC-touch turns the power and Bluetooth-connection on, but why won’t NFC re-touch turn it off?

When holding the SmartEyeglass controller against a compatible NFC smartphone, SmartEyeglass will power up and establish a Bluetooth connection to the smartphone. However, holding the SmartEyeglass controller against the smartphone again will not trigger SmartEyeglass to turn off. To turn off SmartEyeglass, slide and hold the Power switch for 4 seconds.

Bluetooth

Do I have to set up a new Bluetooth connection every time?

No, once you have set up a connection between SmartEyeglass and your device, re-pairing is not required.

However, if there is a problem with the Bluetooth connection between two paired devices, you may need to re-pair. If so, delete the existing pairing on your smartphone and set it up again by holding your smartphone against the SmartEyeglass controller to start the NFC pairing.

Why can’t I pair my smartphone with SmartEyeglass?

Please try the following:

  • Place both Bluetooth devices within 1 m (3 ft) of each other.
  • Make sure the Bluetooth profile of your smartphone matches the SmartEyeglass Bluetooth profiles.

What Bluetooth profiles are supported?

SmartEyeglass supports HFP (Hands-Free Profile) and SPP (Serial Port Profile).

All functions may not be guaranteed in both profiles.

What is the maximum range for the Bluetooth connection?

  • The Bluetooth communication range between your smartphone and SmartEyeglass is about 10 meters.
  • The range depends on SmartEyeglass’s surroundings. The human body, metal, walls, radio waves may impact the actual range.

How many smartphones can I pair with?

You can register the pairing information for up to eight smartphones. When the pairing information for the ninth smartphone is registered, the pairing information for the oldest paired smartphones is overwritten.

How do I pair SmartEyeglass with my smartphone?

You can pair SmartEyeglass with your smartphone in several ways.

NFC-pairing If you have an NFC-supported smartphone, follow these instructions.

SmartEyeglass host app from Google Play to your smartphone.

  2. On SmartEyeglass, turn the Power on.
  3. Place the smartphone within one meter from SmartEyeglass.
  4. On SmartEyeglass, tap Settings > Bluetooth > Pairing.
  5. On your smartphone, turn on the Bluetooth connection and search for nearby devices.
  6. On your smartphone, select the name of your SmartEyeglass device in the list of nearby Bluetooth devices.
  7. When the blue indicator LED on the SmartEyeglass controller is on, you have successfully paired your smartphone with SmartEyeglass.

I have paired the devices, but there is no connection

I have paired the devices, but there is no connectionIf the Smart Connect app is not starting on the smartphone after you have paired your smartphone with SmartEyeglass, the connection has not been set up properly. In this case, start up the Smart Connect app first, and then try to pair the smartphone and SmartEyeglass again.

Can I delete the pairing information on SmartEyeglass?

You can only delete the pairing information for all devices alltogether.

SmartEyeglass can remember the eight last paired devices. When connecting to a ninth device, the oldest device pairing information will be removed.

Why does the Bluetooth connection sometimes drop?

The Bluetooth connection may be interrupted if SmartEyeglass is used in a location with a lot of wireless interference. This could, for example, be an area with many wireless LAN radio signals, near a microwave oven, or any other area where electromagnetic radiation exists. Please use SmartEyeglass as far away as possible from any potential sources of interference.

USB

Can I charge the SmartEyeglass battery through a USB port on my computer?

Yes, you can charge the battery if your computer has a USB port and runs any of the following operating systems:

  • Microsoft Windows 8/Windows 8 Pro, Windows 7 Starter/Home Premium/Professional/Ultimate, Windows Vista (SP2 or later) Home Basic/Home Premium/Business/Ultimate.
  • Mac OS X (version 10.3 or later).

If the computer goes into power save mode while charging SmartEyeglass, the charging will stop and SmartEyeglass will automatically be turned off. An orange indicator LED on the SmartEyeglass controller will be lit if charging has stopped.

Only use the supplied USB cable while charging SmartEyeglass, and connect it directly to the computer. Use of a USB hub may cause charging problems.

How long will it take to charge SmartEyeglass?

It will take approximately two hours to fully charge an empty battery.

The charging time depends on the battery level, and the battery condition. Also, if you charge the battery at a low temperature, it will take a longer time to charge.

How long does the battery last?

If the SmartEyeglass battery is fully charged, the battery will last about 150 minutes, depending on the following conditions:

  • If the camera is not used frequently.
  • If the display is always on and the brightness is at its default setting.

The battery duration time may decrease in a high temperature environment, with the use of an application, or if wireless LAN is on. The battery life may also vary depending on your smartphone.

SmartEyeglass is not charging

If SmartEyeglass does not charge, please check the following:

  • Make sure to use the USB cable supplied with SmartEyeglass. Other USB cables may cause charging problems.
  • Confirm that SmartEyeglass and the computer are directly connected, and not connected through a USB hub.
  • Confirm that the USB port of the computer connection is working. If the computer has another USB port, please reconnect through this USB port.
  • SmartEyeglass will not charge at low or high temperatures. Charge SmartEyeglass at a temperature between 10-30 °C.
  • If you start charging SmartEyeglass when it has not been in use for a long time, any remaining battery power is not enough to turn the orange LED indicator on (on the SmartEyeglass controller). Please leave the USB cable connected to SmartEyeglass, and the charging lamp should lit up after a few minutes.
  • Confirm that the computer is powered on, as the device will not charge when the computer is in stand-by or hibernation mode.
  • Charging may not start if the computer is in stand-by or coming back from hibernation mode. Please reconnect the USB cable in this case.
  • In all other cases, please reconnect the USB cable.

NFC

I can't connect using NFC

Please check for the following:

  • Ensure that NFC is activated on the smartphone. For details on how to enable NFC, please see the user guide for your smartphone.
  • If your smartphone has a cover or case, remove the cover or case, then touch SmartEyeglass with the smartphone.
  • If your smartphone supports NFC, then hold the NFC mark of the smartphone close to the NFC mark on the SmartEyeglass controller. Please see the user guide for your smartphone to find out where the NFC chip is located on your smartphone.
  • If the NFC connection continues to fail, try to connect manually through Bluetooth. Please see the user guide for your smartphone to learn how to pair manually using Bluetooth.

Note: The NFC sensitivity on some smartphones may not be strong enough to connect to SmartEyeglass.

Why does the NFC-connection fail?

If the connection fails, try the following:

  • Keep the SmartEyeglass controller and smartphone together until the smartphone reacts with a sound or vibration, depending on your device and its settings.
  • Make sure you’ve unlocked the sleep or lock function of the smartphone, and then try holding the SmartEyeglass controller next to the smartphone.
  • Confirm that smartphone’s NFC–functionality is activated. Please see the user guide for your smartphone for instructions on how to activate NFC.
  • If the NFC connection continues to fail, try to pair SmartEyeglass and the smartphone manually using Bluetooth.

I can’t pair to my smartphone during a call

You can’t pair during a phone call. Try to connect after you have finished the call.

Wireless LAN

How do I connect SmartEyeglass to a WLAN network?

The WLAN connection is automatically set up when using the SmartEyeglass camera or any other application that use a WLAN connection. It’s not possible to manually set up a WLAN connection.

The wireless LAN connection disconnects

If there are many obstacles in the way in-between SmartEyeglass and the smartphone, or if you are using these devices in an environment with many disturbances, you may get connection problems. In this case, use SmartEyeglass in closer proximity to the smartphone.

Why does it take a long time to establish a WLAN connection?

It may take a long time to establish a WLAN connection between your smartphone and SmartEyeglass under the following conditions:

  • If the smartphone is using Wi-Fi (WLAN) in Location mode. In this case, turn off Location mode in the settings of your smartphone. Set the smartphone to only use the GPS to determine a position.
  • If there is a heavy load on the WLAN, for example due to app updates or file downloads. In this case, suspend any app updates or file downloads.

A WLAN connection is not established when the camera is launched

If the WLAN connection is not automatically activated when launching the SmartEyeglass camera, then activate the Wi-Fi (WLAN) connection on your smartphone before launching the camera on SmartEyeglass. Please wait a few minutes for Wi-Fi (WLAN) connection to be set up before launching the camera. Also, the WLAN connection between your smartphone and SmartEyeglass cannot be established if your smartphone connects through a 5 GHz access point. Please use a 2.4 GHz access point.

Display

Can I turn the display on or off during use?

Yes, you can slide and hold the Power switch of the controller for a second to turn the display on or off. However, the power remains on.

Why does the display sometimes turn off automatically?

This is the default setting in the SmartEyeglass app. The display is automatically turned off after a given time after the last operation according to the Sleep setting.

The display is also turned off when the Smart Eyeglass one-touch display off function is on. By tapping the eyewear part of SmartEyeglass, the display will be turned off.

The user interface visualisation screen looks incorrect

When SmartEyeglass is starting up, you’ll get to see a user interface visualisation right after you have seen the Sony logo. When looking at this user interface visualisation, consisting of a horizontal bar and several vertical bars crossing it, some user may find that the horizontal and verticals lines are not crossing each other. It could also be that you will only see parts of the horizontal line, and not the full line, as in the picture below:

Screen setup (as experienced incorrectly).

If you experience this, please try to adjust how SmartEyeglass is fitted on your face and nose.

The user interface visualisation is partially faded out

Some SmartEyeglass users may experience the user interface visualisation as partially faded out. The user interface visualisation is the horizontal bar crossed with vertical bars, which are shown every time you start SmartEyeglass. It may however be that you interface visualisation is actually being displayed correctly, but due to the visual mechanics of a human eye, it may be perceived as a visual distortion. It’s however not a malfunction. This is similar to how different persons experience 3D movies at cinema in different ways.

There may be an individual difference in perception because different content is being displayed on the left and right display. On the left display, the vertical lines are projected. The horizontal line is projected on the right display. Depending on each person’s ability to perceive depth, some persons may see the user inter face visualisation as partially faded out.

Screen setup as projected from left and right display.

Why does SmartEyeglass sometimes say “sensors are now starting”?

Sometimes when you start the SmartEyeglass device, or when you are starting a new application, you may see the message Sensors are now starting. Please wait. This message is displayed because the sensors available in SmartEyeglass need a short starting time under certain circumstances. The message should only appear for a short while. Please wait until the message disappears, then continue to use SmartEyeglass. You can speed up the waiting time while seeing this message, by calibrating the sensors manually. To do this, hold the eyewear firmly in your hand once you see the message about the sensors starting. Then slowly rotate your hand in a figure of eight (as shown in the image below).

Calibrating the SmartEyeglass sensors manually.

Camera

Why are images taken by the camera in a slightly different perspective from what I see?

The camera is mounted on the left side of the eyewear, so the shooting angle of the pictures may differ from what you see.

It takes a long time to launch the camera

Sometimes the message "Connecting the device and smartphone via Wireless LAN." is displayed and remains for some time. This is because it may take some time to establish the WLAN connection between your smartphone and SmartEyeglass. This could be due to the following reasons:

  • If your smartphone is using Wi-Fi (WLAN) in Location mode, then turn off Location mode in the settings of the smartphone. Set the smartphone to use only GPS to determine a position.
  • If there is a heavy load on the WLAN connection, for example due to app updates or file downloads. In this case, suspend any app updates or file downloads.

If the WLAN connection is not automatically activated when launching the SmartEyeglass camera, then activate the Wi-Fi connectionon your smartphone before launching the camera on SmartEyeglass. Please wait a few minutes for the WLAN connection to be set up before launching the camera.

Preview images aren’t displayed after taking a picture

This is because it may take a long time to establish a wireless LAN connection between your smartphone and SmartEyeglass.

The wireless LAN connection is not established when the camera is launched

The WLAN connection between your smartphone and SmartEyeglass cannot be established if your smartphone connects with a 5 GHz access point. In this case, use a 2.4 GHz access point instead.

Why is the WLAN connection disconnecting?

Obstacles between SmartEyeglass and the smartphone, or the surrounding environment, may be causing connection problems. In this case, use SmartEyeglass in closer proximity to the smartphone.

If you are using a headset connected to your smartphone, any sound will be played only on the headset and not on SmartEyeglass. Disconnect the headset to let the sound be played on SmartEyeglass.

Apps

I’ve added the Gmail or Facebook apps for SmartEyeglass, but the SmartEyeglass display says ``No events``

"No events" may be displayed if the app extension were just installed. It may not have synced with the app services yet.

Why are messages not displayed in my SmartEyeglass social media or email apps?

If you’ve just installed an app, anomalies such as this may occur if your apps have not synced properly yet. Once these apps have synced, messages will be shown in SmartEyeglass.

I see an empty menu slot without any content in the home menu displayed on SmartEyeglass

If you experience one empty menu slot in the home menu displayed on SmartEyeglass, where no content or options are visible, it’s probably because you have a SmartWatch 2 app installed that is not compatible with SmartEyeglass.

This is most commonly caused by having an old version of the Xperia Lounge app installed on your smartphone. Older versions of the Xperia Lounge app include functionality called Sony Football Challenge. Sony Football Challenge is functionality exclusively designed for SmartWatch 2, and does not work for SmartEyeglass. But as SmartWatch 2 and SmartEyeglass share the same architecture, Sony Football Challenge will automatically appear in the list of installed SmartEyeglass applications if you have an old version of Xperia Lounge installed. If Sony Football Challenge appears in the list of installed applications in the SmartEyeglass app, you will see the empty menu slot in the SmartEyeglass menu.

To remove the empty menu slot in SmartEyeglass, and Sony Football Challenge, follow the steps below:

  1. On your smartphone, go to Google Play and update the Xperia Lounge app.
  2. On your smartphone, go to Settings > Apps. From the list of installed applications, identify the SmartEyeglass app. Uninstall the SmartEyeglass host app.
